Activity Offers Look at the Science Behind Color

First-graders in Cami Shuck’s class at Mars Area Primary Center, received a special look at the colors of the rainbow as part of a special presentation offered by Tracy Halmi, Penn State Behrend chemistry professor.

After reading the children’s book, “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Dewalt, Halmi explained that while the rainbow may appear to have many colors, the colors are all components of white light. She then showed how, when combined, red, blue and green light combine to make white light.

The first-graders rotated through four stations — identifying the colors of the rainbow; using acids and bases to change the color of different liquids; creating unique artworks using shaving cream and food coloring; and making translucent slime.

The activities offered an extension of the students’ science curriculum. For more information, call (724) 625-1588.
