Mars Area Primary Center students received an introduction on computer coding as part of a special STEAM lesson.
Students in kindergarten and first grade used BeeBots, bee-shaped robots that required the students to press a sequence of directional buttons to instruct the robots how to move from one spot to another. Students randomly selected cards with a picture or word and were asked to code their BeeBot to move from the “Start” square on a special BeeBot Mat to the space with the related picture or word.
“The students learned that coding is the process of putting directions or commands into a computer to make it work,” says Adrianne Vandevort, STEAM teacher, noting that the lesson helped the students to better understand directionality as well as sequencing, estimation and problem solving.
